Cinematic Diplomacy and Cultural Memory: Dialogues of Belonging Across Turkish and Turkic Cultural Geographies

Öz

This article advances a theoretical reconceptualization of TRT-centered cinematic production across Turkey and the broader Turkic world as an infrastructural modality of aesthetic diplomacy structured by mnemonic governance and calibrated regimes of visibility. Grounded in close formal analysis of eighteen transregionally circulated films, documentaries, and serialized productions released between 2015 and 2023, the argument articulates cinema as a formative aesthetic apparatus organizing cultural memory in durational modulation, ritual temporality, sacred spatial codification, and acoustic continuity. Engaging Jan Assmann’s theorization of cultural memory and Homi Bhabha’s formulation of the “third space,” the article conceptualizes cinematic memory as a translational and institutionally mediated process situated within asymmetrical circuits of circulation. TRT-affiliated works consolidate a patterned audiovisual grammar that stabilizes symbolic reference and reconfigures perceptual access across dispersed yet historically entangled Turkic geographies. Mythic structuration, musical transmission, and calibrated framing operate as mechanisms of relational modulation, generating belonging in iterative repetition, perceptual regulation, and infrastructural coordination. Institutional mediation assumes constitutive status at the level of aesthetic form. The analysis contributes to transnational cinema studies and media theory by theorizing aesthetic diplomacy as a regime of symbolic normalization enacted in managed circulation and patterned recurrence. TRT operates as a central infrastructural agent in the administration of transregional memory; cinema assumes ontological significance as a site where cultural solidarity acquires articulation in regulated aesthetic persistence.
