This study focuses on the role and importance of Niyazi Berkes, who made important contributions to the history of Turkish thought in Ottoman-Turkish modernization literature. Considering the nature of Berkes' works, the environment he is affected by and the political currents he influenced are examined. His understanding of the philosophy of science and the methods he uses are explained. Common themes in his works are determined as Ottoman state-society structure, secularization, Westernization and religionstate relations. The "Eastern despotism" approach he used while analyzing the Ottoman state-society structure, and the dynamics of secularization, which he saw as the core of modernization, are examined. In the study, it is aimed to reveal the contributions of Berkes to the history of political thoughts within the framework of his analysis and interpretation of the crises in Ottoman-Turkish modernization. While Berkes' thoughts were examined through primary sources, especially books, secondary sources about him were also taken into consideration.
