Being centre of a Federal structure dependent on Republic of Iraq today, Erbil is located in the north of the country. When Tugrul Khan, Seljukian Sultan, came to Bagdat upon an invitation by khalif, the region entered into the domination of Turks. It came under domination of Ottoman after During the Iraq campaign of Suleiman the Magnificent (1535), he joined the Ottoman territories with Baghdad. the Stern and remained under control of ottoman until WWI. Central Seljuk governance entered under control of Atabegs due to death of Sultan Sencer in 1157. Having remained under domination of Great Britain for a while, the region reaches to current governing structure as Republic of Iraq under domination of Arabs. Many Turkish- period structurings have been materialized in the region undergoing along and historical process under domination of Turks. In this study, four barracks and two inner city houses belonging to the Ottoman period of aforementioned structuring in Erbil have been evaluated. Kışla (Barrack) is derived from “Kışlak” in Turkish and is a structure group consisted of architectural units where troops spend their winter. It gained its current architectural form during Mahmud II dynasty.
