Postmodernism in the Digital Era: Rethinking Knowledge, Authority, and Truth in the Information Age

This article explores the intersections between postmodernist philosophy and the epistemological transformations of the Digital Era, examining how the postmodern critique of fixed and universal knowledge paradigms aligns with current changes in information production and dissemination. Drawing on the ideas of Lyotard, Foucault, Derrida, and Deleuze, it argues that the pluralism, fragmentation, and decentralization characteristic of digital environments reflect the very principles of postmodern thought. The study highlights how concepts such as Lyotard’s incredulity toward metanarratives, Foucault’s power/knowledge nexus, Derrida’s deconstruction, and Deleuze and Guattari’s rhizomatic model manifest in the digital sphere, where meaning and authority are continuously negotiated through algorithms, networks, and participatory media. The paper considers the ethical and epistemological challenges posed by these transformations, including the proliferation of misinformation, the erosion of institutional trust, and the growing need for critical digital literacy. It concludes that while digital culture amplifies postmodern pluralism and inclusivity, it also intensifies the instability of truth and the instrumentalization of knowledge. By situating postmodern theory within the context of digital epistemology, the study calls for renewed critical engagement with how truth, authority, and knowledge are produced and contested in the Information Age.
