Abstract
On 11th August 117, Hadrian was proclaimed
Emperor by the Syrian Army, of which he was in charge in Antioch. The first
thing he did as an emperor was to organize a funeral for his predecessor
Trajan, to whom he owed his accession to throne. In a letter he sent to the
Senate, he asked to be recognised as the Emperor. His first policy in practice
was to return the rule of provinces, conquered but unable to be ruled by
Trajan, to their former holders, and form dependent buffer kingdoms along
borders. After the regulations along the eastern borders, his first journey was
by land and through Asia Minor, and had the aim of putting the northern
frontier in order. He spent half of his reign of 20 years and 11 months
travelling in provinces. He came to Asia Minor four times. He journeyed in all
Roman provinces in Anatolia, and visited many of the cities. He founded cities
and bestowed on them. He was honoured to be a benefactor, a patron, and a god.
The purpose of this study is to find out the reasons for Emperor Hadrian’s
journeys and his itineraries in Asia Minor.
