THE INTERACTION OF THE CHURCHES OF SAMSUN WITH OTTOMAN LOCAL AND CENTRAL AUTHORITIES
Öz
Abstract: The Ottoman Empire incorporated the sharia of all three Abrahamic religions within its demographic structure into its state hierarchy. Because Ottoman lands were established in the region of ancient Christian communities, Christianity and the clergy, in particular, were directly overseen and protected by the sultanate. However, the reform process taking place in Europe and the diverse structures of Christian elements would also directly impact the Ottoman Empire. Developing transportation, trade, and political alliances would bring about greater Western intervention in Ottoman Christians. This article attempts to explain the developments in Samsun, specifically regarding trade, political alliances, and how Orthodox Christians in Samsun were drawn into the grip of European Catholic and Protestantism, using data evaluated from archival and local sources. The development of Catholic and Protestant churches in the city center, established on the eve of commercial and political relations in Samsun, and their competition with the Orthodox Church, are questioned through their presence in the state.
