Evaluation of Some Common Small Mammal Species in Western Anatolia for Orthohantavirus Carriage

Öz

Orthohantaviruses, members of the Hantaviridae family, are rodent-borne RNA viruses. They transmitted by aerosolization of viral particles in the excretions and secretions of infected rodents and rarely by direct contact with infected rodents. They are an important public health concerns that cause hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome and epidemic nephropathy cases in Eurasia and hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome cases in the Americas. They have also been reported to cause infections in Turkey and their presence in rodents have been indicated.
We aimed to determine the circulating orthohantaviruses and possible host species in some provinces of Western Anatolia where hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome cases have been reported. Serum and lung tissue samples of 49 rodents collected from seven localities during a one-week field study were used. No positivity for Orthohantavirus infection was detected in the samples screened by both molecular and serologic methods. This situation may be related to the temporal, regional and climatic characteristics of the sampling areas.
The evaluation of rodents in Western Anatolia in terms of Orthohantavirus carriage is important due to the cases reported from the region. Since the sample size of this study was limited, a comprehensive study which includes possible host rodent species and samples collected from different periods is needed.
