Stress fractures

Öz

Stress fractures, resulting from phyical exercise have been recognized since l855 when Breithaup: documented foot pain and swelling in a gruoupol Porussıan soldeiers foot. This chaacteristically occurs in a normal bone that is subjected to repeated cylic loading, the load being less than that which causes acure fracture. This is generally seens in military recruits, athletes, ballets and dance students: especially at the beginning of activity: Between the years l978-l988 in Gulhane Military Medical Academy and Medical Faculty Orthopaedics and Traumatology Department l28 stress fracture cases were diagnosed. The average age was 24, between 16 and 54. We used bone scintigraphy in 26 cases that radiologically normal but suspected from stress fracture: 19 of these were positive. Bone scintigraphy can defect stress fractures much earlier than radiology. Wee used bone biopsy in 11 cases to confirm diagnosis. Histopathologic result was callus tissue or normal lamellar bone. Rest of cast immobilisation gives good rsults in most cases. We performed internal fixation in 8 of 17 cases with collum femoris stress fracture. Localisation of ofur 128 cases were 63 in tibia (49.21%). 38 in metatarsasis (29.68%). 24 in femur (18.75%), and 3 in fibula (2.34%)
