Cold injuries: A review of 167 cases

Abstract

The acutes physical findings after cold exposure and subsquent rewarming, together and eventual depth of tissue necrosis, provide the basis for this retrospactive classification system. Cold injury is generally classified into four degrees according to the most severe injury present: I., II., III, and IV. In addition to physical finding, the follawing classsification system includes the environmetal conditions under whih the cold insult occured: Chilplains, Immersion foot, Frostbite, High altitude frostbite. In view of the current understandig of the patholojic process, the most significant part of treating any cold Injury should be an effort the prevent collapse of the microvascular circulatory system. Body temperatures should be restored to normal without delay and further exposure to cold avoided if possibl. Frozen limb should be thawed as rapidly as possible by immersing it in warm water or phsiologic saline lolution (42-44 C). Antisludging agents and sympathectomy is also useful. In this paper 167 cold injuried cases were reviewed. 40 of them had I. degrees, 91 of them had II. degrees, 22 of them had III degrees. and 14 of them had Iv. degrees could injury.
