Late results of retrograd intramedullary Küntscher nailing on children between 3-12 years old -Changes on growth of proximal femur-

Öz

In our clinic, 33 children between 3-12 ages old had been treated by open reduction and retrograd intramedullary Küntscher nailing. Patients were followed up approxiamately 47 months (range 18-84 months). Growth changes and length differences of the proximal femur were evaluated by gage's medhod. All fractures had united and no early complication was seen.On eight patients, no leg lenght discrepancy developed but on the others, mean 9.7 miıimeters (mostly 25 milimeters) length increase developed. On fractured side, collum-shaft angle was 7 degrees greater and collum femoris was mean 2.3 milimeters (mostly 6 milimeters) thinner. On 29 patients, partial or complete epiphyseodesis of trochanter major had formed. With these results,we came to the conclusion that this method should never be applied below six years old children,on the older children, surgical methods not affecting the epiphysis should be preferred and method could be performed close to the time which epiphysis will be closed.
