Treatment of the diaphyseal fractures of the humerus with functional brace

In this study, 16 patients with diaphyseal fractures of the humerus were treated with Sarmiento s functional brace made of polyethylene. The average of the initial varus-valgus angulation was 16.7±13.8 and the final varus-valgus angulation was 6.1±7.8 degrees. The cosmetic problems have not been encountered in those patients with final 20 degrees varus-valgus angulation. The average union rate was 3.9± 1. 7 (2-8) months. There were no non-unions. The range of movement of the shoulder and the elbow were assessed by using Hunter's criteriae immediately after the appliance of the brace was discontinued. According to these criteriae it was determined that the brace treatment did not affect daily activity except one case with total restriction preventing all activity (G1). As the main purpose in fracture healing is regaining the functional activities soon after the functional brace seems to be the treatment of choice in the treatment of diaphyseal fractures of the humerus.
