Outpatlent diagnostic srthroscopy under local ansesthesia

Abstract

In Department of Orthopaedics Surgery and Traumatology of Istanbul Hospital 83 diagnostic arthroscopic procedures under Iocal anaesthesia have been carried out between the years of 1990-1992. These cases have been evaluated in the respect of Iocal anaesthesic and artnroscopic techiques and complications and arthroscopic diagnosis of them. There were 67 males and 15 females with a mean age of 25.1 years. No premedication or sedation of the patients and no tourniquet was used. The mean time of the procedure was 30 minutes (range 20-45 minutes). Diagnostic arthroscopic findings of clinical examination were compared with arthrotomy findings of another group of patients separately and found to have accuracy of 72% and 85%. In the 83 knees examined under Iocal anaesthesia, four complications were encountered. Except when are spesific overridding considerations, Iocal anaesthesia is preferable in the performance of diagnostic arthroscopy. This technique provides a safe, cheap, easy and efficient method to meet the increasing demands of arthroscopic procedures of the knee.
