Closed elastic stable intramedullary nailing of femoral shaft fractures in children

Abstract

Between August 1990 and December 1991, at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology Clinic in Ege University, 16 children with 17 femoral shaft fractures were treated with closed elastic stable intramedullary nailing. The ages ranged from 7 to 13 years, with a median age of 10 years. The average postoperative hospitalization was 3 (min 2, max 4) days We reviewed all the cases after an average follow-up 10 (min 6, max. 17) months All patients with an isolated simple fracture became independent using crutches or walkers within 2 weeks of initial treatmeni Complications were minimal, the most common being nail protrusion caused by the distal end of the nail. There were 5 (29%) cases of local tenderness due to nail protrusion. All patients regained full range of motion within 3-4 weeks after the nails was removed. Conpared with conservative treatmeni this method has a marked advantage in allowing increased patients function and independence during the healing phase. This technique should be considered as an effective alternative treatment for femoral shaft fractures in children.
