The use of external fixators in the management of closed tibial fractures

Abstract

Unilateral, biplanar external fixators were used in the management of closed tibial fractures of 38 patients during March 1989-May 1992 in the Orthopaedics and Traumatology Clinic of Taksim State Hospital. The patients were questioned whether they were satisfied with the results of the treatment. Our patients were evaluated for the healing time of the fractures, the range of joint motions, the rate of union, the rate of complications and they were compared with the results of alternative open or closed methods used in our clinic.All of our patients were satisfied with the treatment and union was succeeded in alI of the cases without a serious complication. The patients returned to their daily and sociallives in a short period of time.
