Fibular shortening and external rotation deformity problems observed in the management of ankle fractures

Abstract

Fibular shortening and external rotation deformity we have faced in the management of ankle fractures result in permanent disability by causing degenerative arthritis. Our goal in this paper is to underline the problem of fibular shortening we have seen after the application of the A.N.K. (Ayhan Nedim Kara) instrument which is a new method in the management of syndesmosis ligament injuries of the ankle, substituting rigid transfixation by enabling functional treatment. Fibular shortening was observed in 26 ankles of 84 patients who were admitted to the Orthopedics and Traumotology Department of Taksim State Hospital from January 1987 to October 1991. Among these patients, 20 of them had comminuted fractures of fibula while the other 6 had oblique fractures.
