Treatment of the supracondylar and intercondylar fractures of the femur

Abstract

Forty-four supracondylar and intercondylar fractures of the femur treated with 95 degree angulated condylar plates and Dynamic Condylar Screws (DCS) were retrospectively evaluated. AII patients were treated by open reduction and internal fixation. The follow-up periods ranged between 1.5-11.2 years (mean, 4 years). Fractures united 2 to 6 months clinically and 2.5 to 7 months radiologically in the final controls. Clinically 35 patients (79.6%) had excellent/good results nine patients (20.4%) had fair/failure results. Radiologically 39 patients (88.6%) had excellent/good results. Five patients (11.4%) had fair/failure results. Of the patients who were treated with 95 degree angulated condylar plates, clinically, 15 (75%) had excellent/good results and 5(25%) fair/failure; and of the patients who were treated with DCS, 20 (83.5%) had excellent/good results and 4 (16.5%) had fair/failure results. We conclude that both L -plate and DCS can be applied in the treatment of isolated supracondylar femur fractures. With the application of DCS, better outcomes can also be anticipated in the remaining fractures.
