Arthroscopic management of the discoid lateral meniscus

Abstract

Discoid meniscus is an uncommon abnormality frequently localized in the lateral aspect of the knee. From 1988 to 1992, 17 patients between the ages of 9-51 (average 30.4) had operative arthroscopy for discoid lateral meniscus. There were 11 (65%) male, 6 (35%) female in (his series. We have applied treatment by an arthroscopic saucerization, producing peripheral rims of approximately normal size. The follow-up period ranged 10 to 44 months (average 28.5 months). According to Lysholm criterias the results were excellent and good in 15 (88%), fair in 2 (12%). in this study, we found that arthroscopic partial meniscectomy with saving normal meniscal structure was a satisfactory procedure in the treatment of discoid lateral menisci.
