The results of fresh osteochondral autograft and allografts utilized in osteochondral defects

Abstract

To investigate the results of fresh osteochondral autografts and allografts applied in joint cartilage losses, 70 guinea pigs were studied. In our study in which 10 guinea pigs were used as control group, osteochondral defects were formed in the right knees of the animals. These defects were restored by fresh osteochondral autografts and allografts. In the first, third and sixth weeks, the macroscopic histologic and histochemical evaluations of the grafts were made. Upon assessment it was thought that there were more degenerative changes in fresh osteochondral allografts compared with autografts and that this may be due to depression in allografts and immunologic response.
