Anatomic total hip arhrplasty (Zimmer) and our preliminary results

Abstract

Nowadays, total hip arthroplasty is extensively applied to the hip joint affected by degenerative diseases, in order to obtain painless and movable hip joint. With these purposes, we applied the anatomic hip arthroplasties (Zimmer) to 109 hip joints of 95 patients in our clinic between September 1991 and February 1995. 25 (26.3%) of patients were male, 70 (73.6¡) were female. Mean age was 48.8 (range 24 years to 73 years). Distribution of preoperative pathologies was: 57 hips were primary coxarthrosis, 20 congenital dislocation of hip, 10 avascular necrosis of femoral head, 8 rheumatoid arthritis, 5 ankylosing spondylitis, 2 posttraumatic arthrosis, 2 FMF, 2 dislocation of hip secondary to cerebral palsy, 1 otto pelvis, 1 sequela of tuberculosis and 1 arthrosis secondary to the fracture of the neck of femur. Prosthesis were applied to the left side of 44 patients, the right side of 37 patients and bilaterally in 14 patients. Average follow-up was 24 months (range 12 to 46 months). According to Merle D'Aubigne and Postel scoring system, results of 93 hips (85.32%) were excellent, 15 hips (13.76%) were good and 1 hip (0.91%) was fair.
