Kinematics of the proximal tibio-fibular joint (an experimental study)

Abstract

Five human cadaver knee joint were used to investigate the kinematics of the proximal tibio-fibular joint (PTF). The knee joint was immobilized using a holder from tibia and femur sides by leaving the fibula unfixed. The joint movements were provided by fibula. Our observations indicated that the joint movements were primarily towards antero-posterior and less frequently in the superior-inferior directions. It was also concluded that PTF joint dislocations generally follow the natural kinematics of PTF . These observations together suggested that this ordinary movement of the PTF protects the lateral collateral ligament (LCL) from trauma, and increases the strength of the musculus popliteus.
