The repair of articular cartilage defects with lyophilized collagen (Experimental study in rabbits)

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to compare the chondrogenic potentials of free periost grafts and lyophilized collagen. 3.2 mm diameter defects were made in the articular surfaces of both femora. Free periosteal graft from ipsilateral tibia was transplanted to the left side, whereas, the defect in the right side was filled with lyophilized collagen. Histologic and Electronmicroscopic examinations were done at three weeks. Histologic and Electronmicroscopic examinations of the left side revealed chondrogenesis in the cambium layer of the periosteum. In the right side after the organization of the granulation tissue around the lyophilized collagen multipotential fibroblastic cells differentiated to chondrocytes and so, young cartilage tissue was formed in this side. In the repair of articular cartilage defects the use of lyophilized collagen is an alternative and possible better way than free periosteal graft. But further biomechanic studies must be done to advocate the histologic and electronmicroscopic results.
