Treatment of the diaphyseal fractures of the humerus with Sarmiento functional brace

Abstract

In the present study we treated 14 patients (11 male, 3 female) who had humeral shaft fractures with Sarmiento functional brace. We applied all braces as custom made for each patient. Minimum healing time was 2 months, maximum healing time was 7.5 months and an average healing time was 3.5 months. Limitation of range of movement (ROM) in shoulder and elbow articulations was minimal and we evaluated the functional results by using Hunter criteria. Average varus angulation before treatment was 18.5¡ and 5.5¡ after treatment. We believe that if it is necessary to get early functional activity, functional bracing of humeral shaft fractures is an efficient and reasonable treatment method.
