Factors that affect the morbidity in adult femoral shaft fractures

Abstract

Fractures of the femoral shaft are among the most common fractures encountered in orthopedic practice. The purpose of this work is to discuss the factors affecting the morbidity, in 84 adult femoral shaft fractures, that were treated by plate-screw fixation and conventional intramedullary nailing techniques in the department of Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery, in the last seven years. Patients were hospitalized for an average of 12±9 days. The average follow up period was 9 months. Clinical results were evaluated by using Denker scoring system. It was shown that shortening the hospitalization period reduces infection rate and makes the final outcome more predictable. As a conclusion, we suggest that early surgical fixation of these fractures (<12 hours), especially for the patients who have high ISS scores (³18), and rapid discharge from the hospital is the best way of treating this major trauma.
