Modified Bristow procedure: Is it effective in recurrent instabilities of the shoulder?

Abstract

New arthroscopic technigues have improved our knowledge about surgical treatment modalities for recurrent anterior inferior instabilities of the shoulder. The aim of this study is to make a retrospective analysis of surgical treatments. In our department 101 shoulders of 98 patients with recurrent shoulder dislocations were treated by surgical means between 1977-1996. Our study includes 46 shoulders of 48 patients that were treated with modified Bristow surgical technique. Mean follow up period was 97 months (6-227) Excellent and good results are %85,68 without any redislocation. Our results and the data we have obtained from the literature showed that modified Bristow procedure was effective in preventing the redislocation, but not as effective in the management for the pathologic components of instability. Therefore we prefer other treatment modalities in view of our arthroscopic experience for the last two years.
