Neuroforaminal size change with cervical motion

Abstract

The neurological impingement syndromes of upper extremity are quiet frequent in daily practise of orthopaedic surgeons. Cervical neuroforaminal stenosis is a common cause of nerve root impingement. The change of neuroforaminal size with cervical motion is a known phenomenon that can be useful not only in differential diagnosis of cervical neuroforaminal stenosis as well as in choosing the ideal position of cervical immobilisation. The aim of this study is to obtain radiographic basis for the neuroforaminal size change with cervical motion. We obtained 9 radiographs with defferent cervical motion in each of 40 healthy volunteer adults. We also measured the foraminal size at three levels (C4 - C5, C5 - C6, C6-C7). Our findings suggest that counterlateral rotation and flexion have an additive effect, ipsilateral rotation and extension have a diminutive effect in neuroforaminal sizes. Ümmobilisation with cervical collar should be in flexion position.
