Treatment of simple bone cysts by autograft and xenograft combination

Abstract

This study compared autografts, xenograft-autograft combinations used in the treatment of twenty four cases of simple bone cysts with respect to the time required and the success of graft incorporation. The end results were comparable in autograft and xenograft-autograft combination groups. The average healing time was 2.6 months for autografts, 2.8 months for xenograft-autograft combinations versus 3.5 months for xenografts. Xenografts have a place in the treatment of simple bone cysts in children which there is not an adequate amount of bone available for an autograft alone to fill the resultant cavity after surgical curettage.
