Age and sex distribution of lower extremity torsional deformities

Abstract

In this study, torsional deformities of the lower extremities in children, were investigated. In an orthopaedic symptom and deformity screening, including 21499 primary school children, 803 cases of toeing-in and 43 cases of toeing-out were detected. We observed that prevalence of toeing-in was significantly elevated in girls, and it decreased with age. While prevalence was 81% at the age of 6 and below, it fell to 16% at the age of 12. The decrease was found to be slower after the age of 8. Femoral antetorsion, excessive internal tibial torsion, protective toeing-in (due to pronated feet and developmental genu valgum) and metatarsus varus was noticed in 76%, 12%, 9% and 3% of toeing-in cases, respectively. Furthermore, 79% of the cases were bilateral, and unilateral ones occurred mostly on the left side. Toeing-out was observed at the same rates in both sexes. Excluding children at the age of 6 and below, there was not a significant difference of prevalence between the age groups investigated. There were 67% bilateral cases, and unilateral ones occurred mostly on the right side. As a result, the rates and characteristics of lower extremity torsional deformities in our population were found to be similar with the literature.
