Arthroscopic treatment of recurrent synovial chondromatosis of the elbow: Case report

Abstract

Synovial chondromatosis is a rare benign disorder that is characteristically mono-articular and most commonly affects the knee. Localization in the elbow is rare. A 41-year-old male with recurrent synovial chondromatosis in the posterior compartment of the right elbow is presented. The patient was admitted one year after an anterior open synovectomy with extreme limitation of motion, pain and swelling. He was treated with arthroscopic synovectomy and removal of loose bodies. The patient was pain free and had significant improvement in the range of motion at one-year follow-up. The unique anatomy of the elbow makes arthroscopic surgery the best option in these difficult cases.
