Traumatic injuries around the elbow in young adults

Abstract

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the fractures and dislocations occurring around the elbow with respect to trauma types, distribution and classification in the military population. Methods: Eighty-eight patients presented with acute elbow traumas during a three-year period. All patients were men and were doing their military service. The mean age was 21.49 years (range 19 to 31 years). Results: The most common cause of elbow injuries was falls (n=46, 52.2%). Gun-shot injuries accounted for 6.8% (n=6). The most frequent type was distal humerus fractures (47.8%). Four of the complex comminuted fractures of the distal humerus, and one medial humeral condyle fracture, which were associated with elbow dislocations, occurred with gun-shot injuries. Of fifteen dislocations, twelve were isolated posterior dislocations; the remaining three patients had accompanying medial humeral condyle fracture, radial head fracture, and olecranon fracture, respectively. Primary nerve lesions were detected in seven patients, involving the ulnar (n=4) and the radial (n=3) nerves. Nerve lesions occurred as a result of gun-shot injuries in three patients Conclusion: The treatment of elbow fractures and dislocations with minimum morbidity is more important especially in young and active persons engaged in military work.
