Pes cavus: an analysis of epidemiologic and clinical features
Abstract
Objectives: To determine the epidemiologic and clinical features of pes cavus deformity.
Methods: Footprints of 3,511 primary school children in Isparta, were investigated with the use of podoscope. All children with pes cavus footprints were further inquired for trauma history, footwear, and subjective complaints. Local examination was performed with regard to pes cavus. Lateral block and push-up tests were carried out depending on the severity of the deformities. A comprehensive neurologic examination was undertaken in each case.
Results: Footprints showed pes cavus in 791 feet of 406 children (11.7%). Most of these patients (65%) had various complaints, mainly heel pain and fatigue. The variety of complaints increased both with age and the severity of deformities (p=0.019 and p=0.006, respectively). Moreover, the severity of deformities increased significantly with age (p=0.006). Analyses of footprints showed that 19.2%, 62.5%, 17.7%, and 0.6% of cases had 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th degrees of pes cavus, respectively. Although subtle neurological abnormalities were detected in 37% of cases, an etiologic factor could be demonstrated in only six patients.
Conclusion: Footprints of school children showed a high prevalence of pes cavus deformity.
