Follow-Up of Callus in Experimental Fractures on which pulsed electromagnetic currents ware adapted, and the investigation of its resistance via Biomechanical procedures
Abstract
Effects of the pulsed high frequency electromagnetic currents on fracture healing have been investigated on 20 fibula of rabbits. Osteotomy has been applied on 10 left fibulas. 5 of them have been formed the control group. No, fixation method have been applied. Subects in the experimental group have received pulsed electro-magnetic current for 28 days 15 minutes in a day, while control group have been left to heal by themselves. 62 Herz pulse frequency, 10 watt mean power and 0,4 m.sec constant pulse duration have been accepted as application parameters of pulsed electromagnetic currents. At the end of the 28th day, radiograms of the both group have been obtained and the subject sacrified. Resistance of the callus in the left fibulas and the intact right fibulas have been compared by biomechanical methods. Bones have been broken with an electronic device (INSTRON 1195) which applies an increasing compressive force ond breaking point curves have been recorded. Subsequently callus have been studied hystologically. The results of experimental group were found to be very satisfactory. In radiological examination of cases all of the fractures were consolidated, and by biomechinanically more resistant than the cases in the control group, and united bones have shown a better progress in the hystological sections.
