Treatment of the tibial fractures by patellar tendon bearing cast (PTB-CAST)

Between 1975-1976, 56 fractures of the Tibia in 54 patients were treated by means of patellar tendon bearing cast (PTB-Cast) at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, University of Ankara School of Medicine. The average union time is 15.5 weeks in, this serie. Although we have observed delayed union in one patient, enough callus was seen im the 7 th month as the cast immobilization continued. We have been using this method because of having free range of knee motion, without rnuscie atrophy, and early union as it is compared to other treatment methods for the fracture of the tibia.
