Hydrarthrosis of the Knee-Joint articulation is an affection frequently observed. Hydrarthrosis, in other words, articular dropsy is due to different causes. Traumatic hydrarthrosis and hydrarthrosis of infectious origin are among the most important ones. Purely traumatic hydrarthrosis is often observed among sportsmen. At times, paraarticular lesions are to be noted at the origin of articular effusions of the Knee. Furthermore, in the course of different affections, effusions into the knee are probably to be found. In general the nature of the knee dropsy, named otherwise intermittent hydrarthrosis, is considered as allergic. In case of hydrarthrosis, the knee joint is tumefied and its form changed. Examination reveals a patellar shock. Limitation of knee motion is accompanied by pain. In order to determine the nature of the hydrarthrosis, arthrosis, arthrography and cytobacteriologic examination of the puncture of the fluid as well as synovial biopsy are to be mentioned. Therapy depends on the etiology. The patient is kept in bed, at rest the knee joint articulation is fixed in a, splint, an ice-bag is laid on the articulation. Intra-articular injections of hyaluronidase and hydrocortisone or other modifiers increase the resorption of the fluid. As hydrarthrosis regresses physical therapys is prescribed. Massages bearing upon the quadriceps, active motion exercises are preventive measures in the respect of a future eventuality of joint relaxation or stiffness.
