Three different approaches to treatment of congenital pseudarthrosis of the tibia

Abstract

Basic treatment principle for congenital pseudoarthrosis of the tibia is to provide solid union and obtain a functional extremity. Three different surgical approaches are carried out to three patients, aged between 1-6 (av.3) and two of them were females, one male, with congenital pseudoarthrosis of the tibia between 1988-1994 . The operations applied to cases were, excision + isografting + osteosynthesis with plate, excision + isografting + ilizarov external fixation and excision + ilizarov external fixation and early weight bearing. Average follow-up period was 43 (between 13-87) months and results were evaluated according to the criteria developed by Morrissy at all. The results obtained after excision + isografting + ilizarov external fixation was fair and the others were good. Although, it is impossible to form an opinion about CTP with these results, concerning three patients, only ilizarov external fixation and early weight bearing was thought to be more effective method than the others. If the number of cases could be increased, this method to be able to discuss in a broad sense.
