Meniscus: anatomy and proprioception

Öz

The semilunar fibrocartilages are of utmost importance to the knee joint. The lateral meniscus is more mobile than its medial counterpart. The anatomic replacement of the anterior and posterior horns is a definite prerequisite for a good result following meniscus transplantation. The anterior horn insertion of the medial meniscus shows great variations. The exact incidence and importance of the meniscofemoral ligaments is still not known. The anatomy of the important neurovascular structures should be kept in mind for a safe arthroscopic meniscus repair. The peripheral 25-30% has blood supply. The proprioceptive function of the menisci has been demonstrated by electron microscopic and clinical studies. The orientation of the collagen fibers is radial and circumferential. A system of nutrient canals has been shown recently.
