A review of design approaches in digital games from the perspectives of applicability and sustainability

Öz

This review examines how design approaches in digital games affect not only narrative form but also the gameplay loop, player experience, historical content transmission, applicability, and design sustainability. In this study, sustainability is not treated merely as a matter of production cost; rather, it refers to the ability to preserve historical knowledge coherently across mechanics, mission structures, narrative layers, environmental design, and possible future content. Designed as a qualitative narrative-integrative review, the study evaluates serialized structures, episodic design, linear progression, branching narrative, embedded and environmental storytelling, emergent/open-world structures, and transmedia world-building through the MDA framework, gameplay loop theory, player agency, and self-determination theory. As an illustrative field of historical uncertainty, the study examines the distinctions between the Great Seljuk Empire and the Anatolian Seljuk Sultanate, as well as the debated genealogical narratives centered on Süleyman Shah and Ertuğrul Gazi. The synthesis indicates that historical content does not become problematic for players merely because it is complex; the main risk emerges when contested knowledge cannot be transformed into objectives, feedback systems, source layers, and interpretable choices within the game system. Accordingly, sustainable design in historically themed digital games depends less on forcing claims of certainty than on making source levels visible, indicating alternative narrative trajectories in a controlled way, and managing uncertainty as a functional design component
