Multidimensional Scaling Analysis According to the Global Knowledge Index of OECD Countries
Öz
Today, the knowledge economy has become one of the main factors defining the countries’ economic growth, innovation capacity and sustainable development performance. In this context, it is important for national development and decision makers, to not only rank the performance of countries’ knowledge economies, but also to highlight their similarities and differences. This study aims to explore the similarity structure of the OECD countries in the sub dimensions of the Global Knowledge Index (GKI) by Multidimensional Scaling analysis. The study used data from the GKI for the year 2025, and the analysis included 37 member countries of the OECD. The analysis was based on six main GKI dimensions namely pre-school and primary education, technical and higher education, research and development and innovation, information and communication technologies, economy and supportive environment . The distances between countries were computed by means of Euclidean distances based on standardized indicators and the similarity structure was assessed by means of a two dimensional non-metric Multidimensional Scaling method. Results suggest that the two-dimensional solution has an acceptable fit (Stress-1=0.08464). The multidimensional scaling map shows OECD countries to be clustered separately according to their knowledge economy profiles, with countries with high and relatively low knowledge economy performance situated in different places. Also, the analysis of the similarity structure of the GKI sub-dimensions showed that the closest structures were research and development and innovation and the economy dimension, while the pre-school and primary education dimension was clearly different from the others.
