Weeds as Natural Vegetation: An Evaluation for Erosion Control and Soil Conservation

Öz

Soil erosion is one of the main degradation processes that limits agricultural productivity, weakens ecosystem services, and threatens global food security. Although the critical role of vegetation in preventing erosion is well known, the functions of weeds, which are generally considered harmful in agricultural systems, are largely overlooked in this process. This study comprehensively evaluates the ecological characteristics of weeds and their roles in reducing water and wind erosion in light of the existing literature. Findings indicate that due to their rapid germination abilities, high soil cover capacity, and diverse root system morphologies, weeds can quickly cover bare soil surfaces, especially during fallow and post-harvest periods. This vegetation cover formed on the soil surface reduces the impact of raindrops, slows surface runoff, and significantly limits sediment transport. Furthermore, organic matter inputs provided to the soil through weed biomass, root residues, and root exudates enhance microbial activity and aggregate stability, thereby strengthening soil structure and improving water retention capacity. However, factors such as competition of weeds with crop plants, allelopathic effects, and the invasive characteristics of some species can pose significant risks to agricultural production. Therefore, instead of completely eradicating weeds, controlled weed management strategies based on species composition and density assessments stand out as a more balanced and sustainable approach. Reconceptualizing weeds from an ecosystem services perspective holds considerable potential to make significant contributions to reducing soil erosion and developing climate-resilient, soil health-oriented agricultural systems.
