A Comment on the Expression of Geometrical Abstract Art through the Concept of the Other
Abstract
The literature reveals that my understanding of abstract plastic arts aligns with the pursuit of pure expression. However, the tendency to regard the ultimate aim solely as pure abstract art is debated, as it is believed that there exist productions with a simple expression beyond this framework. This study aims to demonstrate the existence of diverse paths, purposes, and content within the realm of geometric abstraction through works produced via the concept of “the other,” to develop concepts in this context, and to analyze the form/meaning relationship in my geometric abstract works as an academician. The artworks included in my 2022 solo exhibition titled The Other constitute the study group for this research. A qualitative approach with a phenomenological design was adopted, using the document method as the data collection tool. The selected works were analyzed through content analysis within the framework of the form/meaning relationship, and the findings were evaluated accordingly. Artworks produced in the context of the concepts of “End” and “Essence” were discussed in relation to their predecessors, identifying similarities and differences. It was concluded that pure plastic expressions, devoid of any reference to nature, possess an “other” meaning distinct from the pure expression achieved through conceptual and formal abstractions. In the plastic context, it was determined that the geometric approach embodies the simplest form of expression attainable within abstract art. To enable more accurate classification and definition, it is proposed that “pure geometric abstraction” and “absolute geometric abstraction” be used as subcategories for analyzing works within the framework of geometric abstract art.
