A Turāth-Rooted Renaissance: Arab Modernists, Revivalists, and A Negotiated Modernity

Öz

The article analyzes Turāth as an Arab repertoire of the medieval golden age, which has evolved into an intellectual domain to circumvent colonial "epistemic violence" and post-decolonial Arab socio-political transitions. Where Arab modernists and revivalists are at the frontiers of thought to revitalize Turāth and a Turāth-rooted Renaissance and modernity project. While the object is shared, the modernists reserve a hypercritical revisionism through critiquing Arabo-Islamic ʿAql and virtually all Islamic Turāth. Conversely, the revivalists espouse the Arabo-Islamic Turāth and articulate a methodological innovation to effectuate the Renaissance program. These two conflicting readings of Turāth ultimately lead to problematizing the hierarchical interrelations between the Renaissance and modernity. Furthermore, navigating Arab societies within ‘reality’ in Wael Hallaq’s reconceptualization of the Islamic state and modernity, the modernists operate without a reality-anchored epistemology, while the revivalists are bereft of a methodology to ‘paradigm shift’ the colonially constructed seeds that could theoretically transform the metamorphosis of thought to catalyze the renaissance project. Yet both intellectual currents demonstrate a complementarity absent in others. Thus, the study argues that, through integrative negotiation, a reality-rooted renaissance project is resolved, basing the modernists' interpretative method of Turāth with a ‘reader-centric’ approach on the premise of the revivalist's Renaissance conception.
