The Crown Gate of the Alâeddin Mosque in Niğde: Architectural Design, Plastic Values and Decoration Program
Öz
This study focuses on the monumental portals of the Niğde Alâeddin Mosque (1223), a significant example of 13th-century Anatolian Seljuk monumental architecture. Although the structure has been examined in terms of its general architectural features in existing literature, there is a lack of specific studies providing a holistic analysis of the architectural plasticity of its portals—specifically regarding their tectonic composition, relationship with local materials, and current conservation issues. This research aims to fill that gap in the literature. The portals of the mosque—commissioned by the Niğde Emir Zeyneddin Beşare Bey and constructed by Master Sıddık and his brother Gazi—are evaluated not merely as functional transitional spaces, but as ideological communication surfaces reflecting the era's representation of power and aesthetic sensibilities. Through a methodology combining a comprehensive literature review, visual documentation, and on-site observation, the study analyzes the monumental eastern and northern portals in terms of their local stonework, geometric compositions, repertoire of vegetal ornamentation, muqarnas arrangements, and epigraphic bands from both technical and iconographic perspectives. Additionally, the study investigates the structural basis of the interplay between light and shadow—often described in the literature as a "shadow silhouette"—within the architectural plasticity of the eastern portal's surface design. The study identifies the influence of local stone material on the decorative program, documents the repair phases and current state of physical deterioration, and proposes scientific recommendations for the sustainable conservation of the structure.
