The aim of this study was to determine the factors affecting the knowledge, attitudes and beliefs toward organ donation and transplant of the students at Giresun University School of Health. The population of this descriptive, crosssectional study was the students studying in the midwifery-nursing department in the 20062007 academic year. The sample was formed of the students (n=241) out of the 300 who accepted to participate in the study by replying to a questionnaire administered in classtime under direct observation on 9 March 2007. The data was gathered by means of a questionnaire prepared by the researchers based on the literature. The data were analysed statistically using the SPSS programme. 42.3% (n=102) of the participants were students of the midwifery department, and 57.7% (n=139) of the nursing department. The mean age was 20.83 ± 1.80 (17–25 years old). 88.4% of the students had correct knowledge about donation. While 46.2% expressed that they were considering donating their organs, 8.9% expressed that they were not considering doing so, and 44.9% said that they were undecided. Of those who were not considering donation, 58.3% said they had never thought about it, and 16.7% expressed that they would not consider donation because of the destruction of the body’s unity and their religious beliefs. The organ desired to be donated by 93.5% of the students was the kidney. The knowledge levels of the students participating in this study were found to affect significantly their willingness to donate (p=0.021). No significant statistical difference (p=0.451) was found between the departments in the reply to the question of what organ transplant was. It was found that the students had insufficient knowledge about organ donation, but that they were interested in the issue. So, in order to increase donations, there should be more campaigns with public participation involving volunteers, and more studies aimed at answering questions should be organised
