Etiological and Demographic Characteristics of Vitreoretinal Surgery Patients in The First Year of a Newly Established Retina Clinic
Öz
Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the etiological distribution, demographic characteristics, and postoperative visual outcomes of vitreoretinal surgery (VRS) cases performed in a newly established retina unit between 2022 and 2023. Materials and Methods: This study is a retrospective, observational study that covers 91 eyes that underwent VRS at the retina unit of a tertiary education and research hospital between October 1, 2022, and October 1, 2023. The patients' age, gender, presence of systemic disease, indications for surgery, type of tamponade material used, and visual acuity measured preoperatively and at 2 months postoperatively were analyzed. SPSS 23.0 software was used for data analysis, and the Wilcoxon test was applied for non-parametric data. Results: The study included 87 patients and a total of 91 eyes. The most common surgical indications were vitreous haemorrhage (34.1%), epiretinal membrane (25.3%), and retinal detachment (21.9%). The mean visual acuity after VRS increased significantly from 0.06 to 0.26 (p<0.001). Diabetes mellitus was detected in 66.7% of patients, and hypertension in 59.8%. BSS (39.6%) was the most frequently used tamponade, followed by silicone oil, gas, and air tamponades. In cases of retinal detachment, macular involvement was found to have no significant effect on postoperative visual outcomes. Conclusion: The first annual surgical data from a newly established retina unit largely correspond to the aetiological distribution reported in the literature. The most common indications for VRS are vitreous haemorrhage and retinal detachment. The significant improvement in visual acuity emphasises the importance of early surgical intervention. The data obtained are consistent with the literature and provide important information regarding the surgical profile of newly established centres.
