Epics have an important place in Turkish folk literature, which has a highly developed and rich tradition. The Turkic World is full of epics as a reflection of the rich Turkic history. Dede Korkut Epics, contain important information about Turkic history, geography, language, literature, culture, art and many more. Many people are mentioned in Dede Korkut. One of them is Basat. The name of Basat is mentioned in two epics in The Book of Dede Korkut. Basat is the main hero of Basat Tepegoz’u Oldurdugu Boy. An important place has been given to him in this epic. The Basat type is a reflection of the thousands of years of development of the Oghuzs/Turks. The mythological period in which the Oghuzs/Turks lived in close contact with nature, their gradual transition to civilization and the period when they established civilization were reflected in the Basat Type, which has an important place in Dede Korkut, there are many historical-epic-legendary-mythological layers, the oldest of which dates back to the depths of history. Basat Tepegoz’u Oldurdugu Boy and Duha Koca Oglu Deli Dumrul Boyu, are the oldest historical narratives in Dede Korkut. The origin of these two narratives is mythological and based on mythology and beliefs. However, in the historical process, parallel to Turkish history, they entered and epic and historicization process, and by incorporating partly historical heroes, they gained a largely mythological, partly epic-historical appearance. The Arslan Child’s Story, which has existed among the Turks for a long time, fused with the Tepegoz Story, which had been present among the Turks for a long time, with the Gok-Turk peridod, and incorporated historical elements into ist body, thus Basat Tepegoz’u Oldurdugu Boy emerged. There are also different variants of these narratives in many regions of the Turkic World and in other nations. In this article, Basat in Dede Korkut; his name, family, place in history, Dede Korkut and epics were examined.
