From Geometric Order to Symbolic Expression: Comparative Evolution of Medieval Eastern and Western Ornamentation

The aim of this study is to examine the evolution, typology, and cultural significance of decorative art in medieval Azerbaijani architecture, with particular emphasis on its comparative development within Eastern and Western architectural traditions. The research explores how ornamental systems functioned not only as aesthetic embellishments but also as vehicles of cultural, symbolic, and spiritual expression. The study employs historical-analytical and comparative research methods based on archaeological evidence, preserved architectural monuments, and relevant scholarly literature. Through the analysis of geometric, botanical, zoomorphic, epigraphic, and symbolic ornamental forms, it identifies the distinctive characteristics of Azerbaijani architectural schools and their artistic connections with Byzantine, Western European, and Central Asian traditions. The findings demonstrate that medieval Azerbaijani ornamentation attained a remarkable level of compositional and technical sophistication, founded on the principles of symmetry, rhythm, and proportion. Unlike Western architecture, where decorative programs evolved through figurative and stylistic representations, Eastern architectural decoration, shaped by Islamic aesthetic principles, was predominantly characterized by abstract geometric patterns, vegetal motifs, and calligraphic compositions. Outstanding monuments, including the mausoleums of Momine Khatun and Yusif ibn Kuseyir, exemplify the successful integration of mathematical precision with symbolic meaning, while botanical and zoomorphic motifs reflect broader processes of cultural interaction and artistic exchange. The comparative analysis further reveals both the shared influence of religion on architectural decoration and the distinctive stylistic characteristics that differentiate Eastern and Western traditions. The study concludes that ornamentation constituted an independent artistic language in medieval Azerbaijani architecture, serving to communicate knowledge, preserve cultural memory, and express collective identity. The originality of this research lies in its comparative approach, which positions Azerbaijani decorative art as both a distinctive local tradition and an integral component of the shared architectural heritage of the medieval world

Geometrik Düzenden Simgesel İfadeye: Orta Çağ Doğu ve Batı Süsleme Sanatının Karşılaştırmalı Evrimi

Öz

Bu çalışmanın amacı, Orta Çağ Azerbaycan mimarisindeki bezeme sanatının gelişimini, tipolojisini ve kültürel önemini incelemek; özellikle de Doğu ve Batı mimarlık gelenekleri içindeki karşılaştırmalı gelişimini değerlendirmektir. Araştırma, süsleme sistemlerinin yalnızca estetik bir unsur olarak değil, aynı zamanda kültürel, sembolik ve manevi ifadeyi aktaran araçlar olarak nasıl işlev gördüğünü ortaya koymaktadır. Çalışmada, arkeolojik bulgular, günümüze ulaşan mimari anıtlar ve ilgili bilimsel literatüre dayalı tarihsel-analitik ve karşılaştırmalı araştırma yöntemleri kullanılmıştır. Geometrik, bitkisel, zoomorfik, epigrafik ve sembolik bezeme biçimlerinin incelenmesi yoluyla, Azerbaycan mimarlık ekollerinin ayırt edici özellikleri ile bunların Bizans, Batı Avrupa ve Orta Asya sanat gelenekleriyle olan sanatsal ilişkileri belirlenmiştir. Araştırma bulguları, Orta Çağ Azerbaycan bezeme sanatının simetri, ritim ve oran ilkelerine dayanan son derece gelişmiş bir kompozisyon ve teknik yetkinlik düzeyine ulaştığını göstermektedir. Figüratif ve üslupsal temsillerin ön planda olduğu Batı mimarisinden farklı olarak, İslam estetik ilkeleri doğrultusunda şekillenen Doğu mimari bezemesi ağırlıklı olarak soyut geometrik desenler, bitkisel motifler ve hat sanatı kompozisyonlarıyla karakterize edilmiştir. Mömine Hatun ve Yusuf ibn Kuseyir türbeleri gibi seçkin yapılar, matematiksel kesinlik ile sembolik anlamın başarılı bir biçimde bütünleştirildiğini ortaya koyarken, bitkisel ve zoomorfik motifler daha geniş kapsamlı kültürel etkileşim ve sanatsal alışveriş süreçlerini yansıtmaktadır. Karşılaştırmalı analiz ayrıca, dinin mimari bezeme üzerindeki ortak etkisini ve Doğu ile Batı geleneklerini birbirinden ayıran özgün üslupsal özellikleri de ortaya koymaktadır. Çalışma, Orta Çağ Azerbaycan mimarisinde bezemenin bağımsız bir sanatsal dil oluşturduğu; bilgi aktarma, kültürel hafızayı koruma ve kolektif kimliği ifade etme işlevlerini yerine getirdiği sonucuna varmaktadır. Bu araştırmanın özgünlüğü, Azerbaycan bezeme sanatını hem kendine özgü yerel bir gelenek hem de Orta Çağ dünyasının ortak mimari mirasının ayrılmaz bir parçası olarak konumlandıran karşılaştırmalı yaklaşımında yatmaktadır.
