Post-Impressionist Legacy and Contemporary Canvas Painting

This study examines how the pictorial problems opened by the three pioneers of Post-Impressionism, Paul Cézanne, Vincent van Gogh, and Paul Gauguin, continue to live in contemporary canvas painting, through formal analysis. Art-historical scholarship has dealt with these artists largely within their own periods and mutual relationships, while the direct formal link between their pictorial legacy and contemporary painting has remained comparatively neglected. The study addresses this gap through three conceptual axes: deconstruction and reconstruction, rooted in Cézanne's practice of building volume through multiple perspectives and colour planes; the materiality and gesture of paint, arising from Van Gogh's liberation of the brushstroke from descriptive duty; and flatness and the colour field, originating in Gauguin's conception of synthetism. Once each pioneer's pictorial contribution is defined, every axis traces the bridging generations that carried it through twentieth-century figures such as Willem de Kooning, Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud and Edvard Munch, and shows how this pictorial language has been formally reworked by contemporary painters including Jenny Saville, Cecily Brown, Adrian Ghenie, Anselm Kiefer, and Peter Doig. This bridging-generation concept, identified across all three axes, constitutes the study's original contribution. Rather than a linear claim of influence, artist selection rests on explicit statements and structural affinities evident in the work itself. The findings reveal that the lines opened by Cézanne and Van Gogh frequently intersect on the same canvas, whereas Gauguin's flatness line, mediated through Munch, follows a more independent trajectory. The study concludes that this legacy operates largely as a pictorial grammar rather than a conscious reference, suggesting that because the problems of structure, gesture, and plane left behind by the pioneers remain unresolved, each generation tends to find its way back to them.

Post-Empresyonist Miras ve Çağdaş Tuval Resmi

Öz

Bu çalışma, Post-Empresyonizmin üç öncüsü olan Paul Cézanne, Vincent van Gogh ve Paul Gauguin'in açtığı resimsel sorunsalların günümüz tuval resminde nasıl yaşadığını biçimsel analiz yöntemiyle incelemektedir. Mevcut sanat tarihi literatürü bu sanatçıları büyük ölçüde kendi dönemleri ve birbirleriyle olan tarihsel ilişkileri bağlamında ele almış, bıraktıkları resimsel mirasın çağdaş tuval resmiyle kurduğu doğrudan biçimsel bağı görece ihmal etmiştir. Çalışma bu boşluğu üç kavramsal eksen üzerinden doldurmayı önerir: Cézanne'ın çoklu perspektif ve renk düzlemleriyle hacim kurma pratiğinden türeyen yapısöküm ve yeniden inşa; Van Gogh'un fırça izini betimleyici işlevinden özgürleştiren boyanın maddeselliği ve jest; Gauguin'in synthetism anlayışından kaynaklanan düzlemsellik ve renk alanı. Her eksen, ilgili öncünün resimsel katkısı tanımlandıktan sonra bu katkının Willem de Kooning, Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud ve Edvard Munch gibi yirminci yüzyıl köprü figürleri aracılığıyla nasıl taşındığını izlemekte ve söz konusu dilin Jenny Saville, Cecily Brown, Adrian Ghenie, Anselm Kiefer ve Peter Doig gibi çağdaş ressamların eserlerinde biçimsel olarak nasıl yeniden işlendiğini ortaya koymaktadır. Her üç eksende de tanımlanan bu köprü kuşak kavramı, çalışmanın özgün katkısını oluşturmaktadır. Analiz, doğrusal bir etki iddiası kurmak yerine, sanatçı seçimini hem doğrudan beyanlara hem de eserin kendisinden okunabilen yapısal akrabalıklara dayandırmaktadır. Bulgular, Cézanne ve Van Gogh'un açtığı hatların sıklıkla kesişip aynı tuval üzerinde iç içe geçtiğini, Gauguin'in düzlemsellik hattının ise Munch üzerinden daha bağımsız bir karakter taşıdığını göstermektedir. Çalışma, bu mirasın bilinçli bir referans olarak değil, çoğunlukla resimsel bir dilbilgisi olarak işlediği sonucuna ulaşmakta ve öncülerin bıraktığı yapı, jest ve düzlem sorunlarının hâlâ çözülmemiş olmasının, her kuşağı bu sorunlara yeniden yaklaşmaya yönelttiğini öne sürmektedir.
