SELLA TURCICA: ITS DEVELOPMENT, DIMENSIONS, MORPHOLOGY AND PATHOLOGIES

Öz

Sella turcica is a very important anatomic structure for the determination of sella point during the orthodontic evaluation of lateral cephalometric radiographs. The development, changes and pathologies in dimensions and morphology of this important structure are associated with different anomalies and syndromes in literature. For this reason, the detailed analysis of this region in lateral cephalometric radiographs can play a key role in early diagnosis of some diseases. The aim of this review is to evaluate the anatomy and dimensions of sella turcica, how to determine and classify its morphologic and dimensional variations and the pathologies related to this region in orthodontic literature.

Öz

Sella tursika, ortodontik değerlendirmeler sırasında lateral sefalometrik filmlerden sella noktasının tespiti nedeniyle oldukça önemli bir anatomik yapıdır. Bu önemli yapının gelişimi, boyutlarındaki ve morfolojisin- deki değişiklikler ve patolojiler, literatürde çok farklı anomaliler ve sendromlarla ilişkilendirilmiştir. Bu nedenle, lateral sefalometrik filmlerde bu bölgenin detaylı analizi, bazı hastalıkların erken dönemde teşhi- sinde kilit rol oynayabilir. Bu derlemenin amacı, sella tursika bölgesinin normal anatomisi ve boyutları ile; morfolojik ve boyutsal varyasyonlarının nasıl tespit edildiğini ve sınıflandırıldığını gözden geçirmek ve ortodonti literatüründe bu bölgeyle ilişkilendirilen patolojileri irdelemektir.
