Assessment of One-Year-Long Temperature Record of Karaca Cave (Gümüşhane, NE Turkey)

Öz

Caves, an important component of the ecological heritage, have a distinctive atmospheric structure which is very different from outside air conditions. Touristic usage of show caves has a potential to create irreversible ecological changes within caves. In this study, we measured one-year-long continuous temperature record of the Karaca Cave from 20 July 2007 to 20 July 2008 in Gümüşhane, NE Turkey. The results show that (a) there is a huge difference between interior and outside atmospheres in terms of air temperature, relative humudity and gas composition and (b) the amplitudes of the variations in cave temperatures are too low and (c) cave atmosphere is affected by touristic visitations, (d) CO2 levels in the cave are not risky for human health but it can lead to corrosion on speleothems if the condensation rates increase. The study suggests that it is crucial to have a management plan by monitoring climatic parameters of the cave in order to maintain sustainability of the Karaca cave. This is the first study which systematically records a cave temperature in Turkey

Karaca Mağarası’ndaki (Gümüşhane) Bir Yıllık Sıcaklık Ölçüm Sonuçlarının Değerlendirilmesi

Öz

Ekolojik mirasın önemli bir unsuru olan mağaralar, serbest atmosferden farklı olarak kendilerine özgü bir atmosfere sahiptir. Mağaralardaki turistik faaliyetler ise, mağaraların ekolojik özelliklerini geri dönüşümü olmayan bir şekilde dönüştürme potansiyelinesahiptir. Bu çalışmada, Gümüşhane ilindeki Karaca Mağarası’nda 20 Temmuz 2007-20 Temmuz 2008 tarihleri arasında kesintisiz olarak yapılan sıcaklık ölçümleri mağara mikroklimatolojisi bakımından incelenmiştir. Elde edilen bulgular, mağara atmosferiyle serbest atmosfer arasında büyük farkların olduğunu; mağara içerisindeki sıcaklık değişimlerinin amplitüdünün oldukça düşük olduğunu ve mağaranın yapılan turistik ziyaretlerden olumsuz yönde etkilendiğini ortaya koymuştur. Mağaradaki CO2 seviyesi insan sağlığı açısından bir risk taşımamakla birlikte, mağaradaki nisbi nem oranlarının artması durumunda korozyon etkisi yaratması söz konusudur. Mağaranın ekolojik varlığını devam ettirebilmesi için mağaranın mikroklimatik parametrelerinin düzenli olarak takip edilmesi ve bir mağara kullanım planı hazırlanması gereklidir. Bu, Türkiye’de bir mağara atmosferinin sistematik olarak ölçüldüğü ilk çalışmadır
