Wellness and Psychological Counseling and Guidance Education

Abstract

The concept of wellness is directly related to the developmental, strengths-oriented and preventive philosophies that form the foundations of the counseling and guidance profession. Wellness is considered as a lifestyle centered on optimal health and well-being. American Counseling Association's code of ethics includes as a standard that counselors should engage in self-care activities and enhance their wellness and mentions the need for both counselor educators and counselors in training (CITs) to monitor their own wellness. Therefore, the importance of teaching models and assessment tools related to wellness to CITs throughout counseling education is emphasized. Based on this, it was asked if counselor education cover the courses related to wellness in Turkiye, in three level of education. After investigation of 23 counseling programs it was found that the number of courses directly related to wellness and self-care in undergraduate curricula is quite limited, yet it is seen that there are selective courses on the five dimensions most emphasized among wellness models. Some suggestions are provided about counselor education and future research studies.

iyilik Hali ve Psikolojik Danışma ve Rehberlik Eğitimi

Öz

İyilik hali kavramı, psikolojik danışma ve rehberlik mesleğinin temellerini oluşturan gelişimsel, güçlü yanlara odaklı ve önleyici yanı olan temel felsefe ile doğrudan ilişkilidir. İyilik hali, optimal derece sağlıklı olmaya ve iyi oluşa dayalı bir yaşam biçimi olarak ele alınmaktadır. Amerikan Psikolojik Danışma Derneği’nin etik kodları psikolojik danışmanların profesyonel sorumluluklarını yerine getirmek için özbakımla ilgili aktivitiler içinde olmalarını içermekte ve hem psikolojik danışman eğitimcilerinin hem de psikolojik danışma öğrencilerinin kendi iyilik hallerini izlemelerinin gereğinden söz etmektedir. O nedenle psikolojik danışma eğitimi boyunca öğrencilere iyilik hali ile ilgili modellerin, ilgili değerlendirme araçlarının öğretilmesi ve bu konuda uygulamalar yapılmasının önemi vurgulanmaktadır. Bu bilgilere dayalı olarak Türkiye’deki psikolojik danışman eğitiminde bu konudaki derslere ne kadar yer verildiği sorusuna yanıt aranmıştır. Toplam 23 üniversitenin programları incelendiğinde doğrudan iyilik hali ve özbakımla ilgili dersler son derecede sınırlı olsa da iyilik halini boyutlarını destekleyici seçmeli derslerin verildiği görülmüştür. Psikolojik danışma eğitimine ve gelecekte yapılabilecek araştırmalara yönelik öneriler sunulmuştur.
