EVALUATION OF NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING METHODS FOR DETECTING VARIOUS DETERIORATION TYPES IN HERITAGE STRUCTURES
Öz
This study provides a critical examination of non-destructive testing (NDT) methods applied in the restoration of historic buildings. Many NDT techniques reported in the literature have been developed for use not only in heritage structures but also in industrial contexts, which can pose practical challenges in conservation practice. Key limitations include the logistical difficulties of transporting and deploying testing equipment, cost considerations, and the inability of certain methods to evaluate large sections of a structure simultaneously. In addition, each NDT method exhibits sensitivity to specific types of material deterioration, which may limit its effectiveness and efficiency in restoration processes. Within this framework, the study systematically reviews the types of deterioration commonly observed in historic constructions and compiles the corresponding NDT methodologies documented in scholarly literature. A comparative analysis is conducted to assess the capabilities, advantages, and limitations of each method in detecting various forms of structural and material degradation. The results aim to provide a structured basis for selecting appropriate NDT techniques, thereby optimizing accuracy, operational efficiency, and cost-effectiveness in the conservation and rehabilitation of heritage architecture.
